We removed climbing bolts from rural cliff faces to prevent unauthorized access and private owner liability.
Over the course of several weeks, our team rappelled and scoured three cliff faces and removed all traces of climbing bolts that had been installed over many years. These bolts were used to climb the cliff by rappelling enthusiasts. Because the climbing bolts were used on private land, the owner was worried about liabilities if climbers were to sustain injuries from climbing the cliffs and using the bolts. To discourage further use of the cliffs, all climbing bolts were removed. The process involved teamwork and lots of manual labor. With the use of impact drivers, chisels, and hammers, all bolts were removed. Special care was given to safety while workers were suspended for hours. This project was both exciting and tiring. A balance of daring and endurance were required to complete the effort.
